The heroine meets her new BFF and just a few weeks later there are a lot of references that don't make sense without a long-standing friendship. Her other BFF has a country home, which we're told she has never been to, but then later that's contradicted by implication. So, continuity error kind of stuff. The heroine is, frankly, pretty rude and disrespectful in her assumption that an amateur can do the job of a professional. Both the hero and heroine seem to be attracted to each other but not to respect each other (until they kiss and then the only thing to work out is the murder mystery because suddenly it's love). Getting dialogue right is really important when you're writing historical fiction. This novel is set in the mid nineteenth century in London. The dialogue, however, sounds like mid twentieth century United States. It isn't filled with slang, but it doesn't ring true to the place and time either. - 2.0 out of 5 stars from Kindle Customer -- Okay : if you can put aside the historical inaccuracies and the very, very modern relationships between the main characters and just read it as a romantic mystery is Not too bad, not great but Not bad.Not sure what era it is supposed to be in but it seems to romp all over Victorian and Edwardian England. The romance was building but then took great big leaps that made me think of missed a chapter or two. The mystery side was probably the best part of the book. I may read the next one as Caro seemed a more engaging character, the mc in this one could be a bit annoying. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 31, 2021 )
